When a computer repair service takes longer than it should and costs too much, it's always an unpleasant experience for everyone involved.

 Over the last few years, I've spent a lot of time trying to fix a desktop computer that was given to me by my dad. He bought it in the late 90s and it was still running Windows XP when he gave it to me. I figured I could easily just update the OS and everything would be fine, but over the years there were a lot of attempts to use it for different things but it never really worked properly. A few months ago, I decided that I'd try to use it for a 3d design project I'm working on, so I deleted all of the old programs and just started from scratch. In order to do this, I reinstalled Windows XP (I don't have any other versions or discs). After I updated the drivers and installed the software I needed, the computer was still running really sluggish and even sometimes crashed. Eventually, some programs wouldn't work at all.
